Session 5: Technology

Session 5: Utilising technology to enhance student learning

The faculty supports the integration of technology in teaching and learning primarily through Blackboard, the university’s Learning Management System. Although the move to online or e-learning has provided students with access to learning resources at any time, in reality, this ease and flexibility has meant an increasing workload for academics. Without an evidence-based view of student learning, it becomes more and more tempting for teaching and learning online to be seen as a purely bureaucratic exercise with no solid educational purpose.

In this session, you will have an opportunity to consider your own views about teaching and learning online, to discuss how it adds value-to your students’ learning and to think about the resources available for you to manage the process. The goal of the session is to help you make educational decisions about the integration of the range of LMS tools in your subject. You will be able to view a range of innovative LMS sites for a number of subjects both within and outside the faculty. If you are just starting out with the LMS, we encourage you to experiment with small-scale innovations. If you are an experienced user of the LMS, we encourage you to think about its articulation with the curriculum in your subject as a whole (again, the issue of constructive alignment).
