Workshops
TLU workshops are for all students in the Faculty: graduate and undergraduate, local and international.
Bookings are not essential. Just turn up with a pen, paper and desire to practise and learn.
Please note: each two-hour workshop covers two related areas. Feel free to attend either session or both.
All workshops are held in Room 310, 198 Berkeley Street, ‘The Spot’.
Referencing Systems
Completely confused by the APA and Harvard Referencing Systems?
Quite confident but keen to ask some questions?
This workshop will address all of your questions about the Harvard and APA referencing systems and will give you opportunity to practise referencing in ways appropriate in the Faculty.
Referencing Techniques
When and how should you paraphrase, summarise and quote?
How can you reference to show your critical voice?
This workshop will give you opportunity to practise paraphrasing, summarising and quoting, and it will help you use a range of reporting verbs and phrases that allow you to integrate references thoughtfully.
Academic English for Economics and Commerce Students
Is your writing clear, accurate and concise? You may have insightful ideas, but can you communicate those ideas in English good enough for academics and major employers of Economics and Students graduates?
Come to this workshop to build essential academic English skills.
Grammar
Improving your grammar: complicated, difficult, essential.
This session will look into common grammar problems and will give you an opportunity to ask questions, conduct practice activities and address your individual problems with grammar.
Critical Thinking and Writing
Critical thinking: all lecturers in the Faculty expect it, but what is it and how can you show evidence of it?
This session will help you understand what is often meant by critical thinking. It will also help you read and write more analytically.
Essays and Reports
Not sure how to structure the assignments you will have to write in the Faculty? Not sure what goes into an abstract, an introduction, a discussion, or even a good body paragraph? Not even sure how to begin your assignment? This workshop can help you get started and can clarify how to structure and write your work.
Presentation Skills
Do you have to deliver a presentation this semester?
Whether you are frozen with fear or just want to refine your techniques, this session can help you deliver clearly structured and compelling oral presentations. And don’t forget, having great oral presentation skills can only help when you go for job interviews.
