Individual Consultations for students

The TLU offers individual consultations to enhance your learning and help you overcome any study difficulties.

If you're an undergraduate student, you may you need some basic maths help for QM1, QM2, Intermediate Microeconomics, and Introductory Econometrics.  Students can also arrange to have an individual maths and statistics consultation.

What is an individual consultation?

Individual consultations can cover written assessment tasks, effective reading and note taking, writing, study skills, time management, motivation, exam preparation or basic maths skills. If your individual consultation is for a written assessment task, you can come at any stage in the process - planning, drafting, or editing.

What to expect

Individual consultations usually run for about half an hour. During this consultation the learning adviser will:

  • Give advice on grammar, style, expression, structure or logical development of an argument, referencing, preparing for a presentation, organising your time, planning for exams and assignments, or other study-related matters.
  • Comment on areas in your written assignments that need further explanation.

However, during this consultation the learning adviser will not:

  • Comment on content, factual or theoretical correctness.
  • Re-write your work for you.
  • Proofread or edit your work for you.
  • Suggest or recommend to the lecturer in the subject that you be given an extension of time for a written assessment task.
  • Review take-home exams.
  • Comment on written assessments for subjects outside of the Economics and Commerce Faculty.

If you are experiencing any personal difficulties, the TLU recommend you seek advice from the University's Counselling Service. While the TLU staff are sympathetic, they are not qualified counsellors. Students who are seeking careers advice, should visit the University's Careers and Employment Service

Graduate students seeking careers advice should visit the Graduate Careers Centre.

Students seeking assistance in subjects from other Faculties should contact that Faculty's Student Centre.

Preparation for an individual consultation

Keep the following in mind:

  • If you are submitting a large piece of written work (more than 1500 words) for TLU advice, we would appreciate it if you email it at least 24 hours before your consultation so we have time to consider it carefully. This saves your time and makes the consultation more effective.
  • Students who want help with an assignment should see a staff member at least a week before the assignment deadline. Note that during peak periods there is great demand for TLU services.
  • Carefully correct and proofread your document before the consultation.
  • Bring a hard copy of the document with double spaced text.
  • Bring the instructions on what you are required to do.

How many appointments can I have?

You can see a member of the TLU up to eight times per semester. If you need to come for another consultation on the same piece of work you must see the same staff member.

Making appointments

To make an appointment, please call the TLU on 8344 4464 (Jennifer) or 8344 3645 (Sonia) during office hours.  Please have your student card, email address and desired appointment time ready.

Where to go?

All students with appointments must be waiting on the seats in the reception area of Level 4, 198 Berkeley Street at the correct time.  Late arrivals will not be seen.

Cancellations

If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, you must contact the TLU office at least 24 hours prior to the time.  Same-day cancellations will not be accepted unless you are ill.
