Online Tutor

Online Tutor

The Online Tutor is an online question and answer forum which students can use to post questions to tutors and lecturers. Tutors are nominated from each subject to answer questions, to give timely feedback to students (usually within a 24-hour period), and to encourage student participation in the system.

The questions and answers are available online so all students not only benefit from the topics, but can also make judgements about their understanding of the subject matter.

The Online Tutor helps students in several other ways too. Firstly, the process of constructing the question aids students’ thinking. Secondly, students can ask questions when the issues are fresh in their minds. Thirdly, it is particularly beneficial for international students who may be less willing to ask questions in class.

All questions are vetted by the tutor before publication, giving tutors the ability to delete inappropriate questions.

Online Tutor - Tutor’s Guide
A guide has been prepared on the use of the Online Tutor. The guide explains how to access the system, answer questions, configure the system to best suit your subject, manage the question and answer database, and access the Student Usage and Subject Comparison reports. The guide can be downloaded here: http://tlu.ecom.unimelb.edu.au/online/tools/OnlineTutorTutorsGuide.pdf.

Online Tutor - Student’s Guide
A guide has been prepared for students. Although the Online Tutor is simple to use, the student’s guide provides specific instructions for interested students on how to use the system. Importantly, the student’s guide provides a set of usage guidelines. You may like to refer to these guidelines in lectures at the start of each semester, or copy the guidelines into your Subject Guide or LMS subject page. The student’s guide can be downloaded here: http://tlu.ecom.unimelb.edu.au/online/tools/OnlineTutorStudentsGuide.pdf.

Registering to use the Online Tutor
An email will be sent out to all academic staff in the Faculty of Economics and Commerce just before the start of each semester, with a reminder email sent out in Week 1. To register to use the Online Tutor in your subject, simply reply to the email, providing the code and name of your subject, and the names and University usernames of each staff member that will need access to the Online Tutor. You will be notified by email once the Online Tutor has been configured for your subject and is linked to your subject page (usually by the end of Week 1).
