Martin Davies

 

        Martin Davies

BA (Deakin), RSA CELTA (Cambridge), BA Hons, PhD (Flinders), GradDipEd, PhD (Adelaide)
Deputy Director and Senior Lecturer/Honorary Research Fellow

Martin holds doctorates from Flinders University (1994) and The University of Adelaide (2002). He was appointed as a lecturer at the Faculty in 2003 and made continuing in 2005. Prior to that he worked at Monash University and as a Philosophy lecturer at Adelaide, Flinders and Edinburgh Universities. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in Higher Education in the Teaching and Learning Unit and an Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Economics. He is also a member of the Victorian Institute of Teaching, the Australasian Association of Philosophy and the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia. He is an Assessor for the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (formerly the Carrick Institute) and an Associate Editor for the A* journal: Higher Education Research and Development. He is Guest Editor for a forthcoming issue of the HERD journal in 2010 entitled: Critical Thinking in Higher Education.

Martin's research interests overlap areas in Education and Philosophy, especially issues associated with the teaching of critical thinking, reasoning and argument, computer-aided argument mapping, and intercultural differences in inference patterns. He is currently doing work on biases in the use of teaching surveys, and investigating the relationship between teaching quality instruments and the Course Experience Questionnaire (CEQ). He is a coordinator for the annual Quantitative Analysis of Teaching and Learning Forum in Higher Education in Economics, Commerce and Business disciplines which has been running since 2005.

Martin teaches the Graduate Enrichment Program (PEP) and the Commerce Research and Learning Skills Program (CRALS) programs and serves on the Faculty International Committee, and the Mac Pre-Term Working Party. He will be convenor in the new Academic Writing and Publishing subject (325-616), from semester 2, 2010.

Martin is an Associate of the argument mapping and critical thinking company, Austhink .
